The Philadelphia Swing
Dance Society & Local Swing Calendar !
The Philadelphia Swing Dance Society
was created in 1987 by dancers for dancers. It is still volunteer-run
and one of the nation's largest, non-profit swing dance
organizations that sponsors community swing dances to live
music! Their super-friendly social dances are generally
the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month with great live bands
for most of the dances. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
No partners necessary. The dance floor is huge and wood,
the environment is alcohol and smoke free. They don't care
whether you "Dress Up" in period costume or come casual.
Whatever makes you happy !! Just come and dance, dance, dance
and tell your friends to come and party with all of us too !!!

ALERT ! BAND ALERT !
Do you KNOW or are you IN
a GOOD SWING DANCE BAND?...
Just being a good band is not enough
for swing dancers - they have some special needs because
of the nature of dancing. What makes a good "swing dance"
band ? Swing Dancers will ASK for your band again and again if
you consistently provide the following:
(a) Skillfully played and enthusiastically
presented music from ANY era (1930's to present) they will
enjoy,
(b) a variety of tempos from slow
to fast to show off their stuff (for instance, 25% 100 to 130
beats per minute, 50% 140 to 180 bpm, 25% 190 to 220 bpm), and
(c) songs of 2 to 5 minutes in length
so that they can change partners frequently !
IF YOU THINK YOUR BAND MEETS
THESE REQUIREMENTS, please do the
following. Call Jim Kitch @ 1.610.676.0123 and send him a cassette
or CD (studio, live performance or practice sessions) with
an assortment of songs by your band which you think meet the above
requests a, b, & c. I will listen to it and pass it on to
PSDS' Board (of which I am a member) for group review and discussion.
Based on our past 12+ years of hiring bands, we will call you
if we feel our dancers would enjoy dancing to your music !! And
if we can't hire you immediately, PLEASE do not take it personally...
